Rektor’s Greeting
One of eighteen United World Colleges, supported by 155 National Committees and an International Office located in London and Berlin, Red Cross Nordic is an exceptional and unexpected community of deliberately diverse individuals waiting to welcome you on the shores of the fjord of Flekke in Western Norway.
Far from the global challenges which our students will inherit, we celebrate our Nordic context, we respect and take action to protect our natural environment and we explore the complexity of humanity through our association with the Red Cross. These three pillars form the basis of understanding our World which is more challenging and more complex than ever before.
The Red Cross Nordic United World College exists because of the financial support of the government of Norway and other Nordic countries, the Red Cross and private donations. It is not a private school. At UWC RCN we aim to:
– Offer places to students from more than 90 countries, regardless of their financial circumstances.
– Empower students through experiential education through living and learning together from deliberately diverse contexts, facing physical adventure and intellectual challenges, sharing and shaping perspectives, forming extraordinary relationships and joining a supportive network that will last a lifetime.
– Provide academic skills through the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma, offering a range of subjects, promoting project and enquiry based approaches to learning, and challenging our students to ask their own questions, learning to learn and to contribute to the learning of others.
– Share our mission and purpose, through UWC Connect (currently to almost 3,000 visitors a year.)
“Tears, laughs, chats about existential issues, global warming, incessant rain, blue sky, sunshine, climbing, sleeping, swimming, sailing, running and academics merge.”
At UWC Red Cross Nordic we think about the future and seek to shape it with a unique educational model aiming to empower our students with the knowledge, skills and competencies they need to make our world more sustainable and more peaceful for everyone and everything.
